Pygmy Date Palm Appearance

Pygmy date palm is a true palm, being part of the Arecaceae family.

The height, when mature, is usually 6-8 feet, although it can reach 10+ feet in exceptional cases. Some Pygmy date palms grow straight vertically, and some curve to the side. Typically 3-6 feet in width.

Bright, cheery green fronds are pinnate (feather-like) and 2-4 feet long. They form a crown at the top at the center of the tree, gracefully arching at the ends. Small spines at the base of the leaves.

Small, yellow flowers grow on 1 foot long stalks, followed by small, purple fruits that look like dates. These fruits emerge on female plants only and are edible.

Rough, grey to a brown trunk with lots of bumpy edges from the base of fronds that are no longer on the tree.

Pygmy Date Palm Landscaping Tips

Great candidate for adding a tropical look to the yard for less space and water.

Typically planted in clumps of 2 or 3, these palm trees can fit in many areas due to their compact size. Some examples include near swimming pools, entryways, driveways, courtyards, narrow yards, and in between bigger trees.

When planted in clumps, the tree trunks curve away from each other to maximize sunlight, creating a fun, island-like feel.

Pygmy date palms grow on the slower side, usually 6 inches a year.

They do well indoors given bright, direct light. Great container plant.

Pygmy date palm is low maintenance. To keep the tree looking healthy, we recommend removing old fronds and using a fertilizer formulated for palm trees.

Pygmy Date Palm Care

Soil: Well draining soil. We recommend using a fertilizer formulated for palm trees to keep the fronds green and healthy.

Temperature: Can withstand temperatures down to frost (=32 degrees Fahrenheit) for a short period of time.

Water: Requires moderate water. More drought tolerant once mature. Deep, an occasional watering during winter, allowing the soil to dry out. More frequent watering during the growing season and especially during heatwaves. If you have questions about watering suitable for your region and microclimate, please contact us or ask us at the nursery.

Pygmy Date Palm Problems

Pests: Pygmy date palm has minimal pests which include scales.

To remove scales, pick them off or use horticultural oil or insecticidal soap. Horticultural oil will kill both crawlers and adults with direct contact. Insecticidal soap is better used to target only the crawlers. Whenever using any kind of pesticide, be aware that it can damage the plant if the temperatures are in the 80s or above.

Signs of overwatering: Wilted fronds, especially with brown tips. Soil that never dries out.

Signs of too little water: Yellowing fronds, weak fronds

Signs of too much sun: Burning, fading color

Signs of too little sun: Etiolation, yellowing fronds
