Golden Dewdrop Appearance

Golden dewdrop is a long evergreen shrub that can grow to 25 feet tall and 10 feet wide. Multi-trunked with many gracefully arching branches. The older branches become tough and woody, while the young branches are green and flexible.

Medium green leaves have serrated edges.

Small, showy flowers grow on new branches from spring to fall or year-round in the Coachella Valley. The most common colors are violet and white, but some varieties can be more purple, blue, or white.

Followed by small, yellow fruits containing seeds.

Golden Dewdrop Landscaping Tips

Golden dewdrop can be grown as a vine along a trellis or screen. It can also be grown as a shrub or standalone tree.

Provides showy flowers year round.

Provide full sun in temperate regions. Provide shade from the afternoon sun in hot and dry regions for best performance.

Performs well in containers.

The flowers and fruits attract bees, butterflies, and birds.

Toxic if ingested. Keep from curious children and pets.

Frost will damage parts of the plant, but it will bounce back as long as it hasn’t been exposed to temperatures down to 20 degrees for an extended time. Prune frost damage in late winter to early spring.

Golden Dewdrop Origin

Golden dewdrop is from tropical regions of the Americas, including Florida, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Golden Dewdrop Care

Soil: Duranta is not particularly picky about soil, but loose, well-draining soil that is moderately fertile would be best. For best blooms, fertilize during the growing season.

Temperature: Can withstand temperatures down to 20 degrees for a short period of time.

Water: Provide regular, moderate water. Increase the frequency of watering during the summer.

Sun: Full sun or partial shade. Shade from the afternoon sun is best in Palm Springs region.

Golden Dewdrop Problems

Pests: Common pests found on golden dewdrop are spider mites.

To remove spider mites, use horticultural oil for crawlers and insecticidal soap for mites of all stages.

Whenever using any pesticide, be aware that it can damage the plant if the temperatures are in the 80s or above.

Signs of overwatering: Drooping, squishy texture

Signs of too little water: Shriveling leaves, and flowers that shed prematurely

Signs of too much sun: Burning, scarring, fading color

Signs of too little sun: Etiolation, stunted growth, few flowers

Golden Dewdrop Propagation

The easiest way to propagate golden dewdrop is through cuttings. Use a sharp tool to get cuttings, and plant them in moist soil. Keep soil moist until well established.
