Canary Island date palms are some of the most robust-looking palm trees.
When mature, they have dense crowns with 100 or so palm fronds that are each over 10 feet long. These leaves are deep green and almost look shiny.
More noticeably, they have a large stature at about 60 feet tall and wide trunks that can reach 4 feet in diameter.

Canary Island Date Palm Appearance
Canary Island date palms grow slowly to 60 feet tall and 30 feet wide.
Dense crown of up to 100 palm fronds. They are feather-shaped, deep to dark green, and 10-15 feet long.
Gray-brown trunk has remnants of old palm fronds in a diamond pattern.
Very sharp spines at the base of the leaves.
When in bloom, female date palms grow cream-colored flowers on orange flower spikes.
Followed by dates that grow in bunches.

Produces dates that are not sold commercially for consumption. They are edible, but not as sweet as the dates from the common date palm. They also are smaller and harder to eat due to the small fruit and large seed.
In the Palm Springs region, performs best in areas that are shielded from intense afternoon sun. For areas that get full sun, we recommend planting the common date palm instead.
Trees are male or female and require pollination to fruit.
Keep dead fronds pruned to keep the tree looking tidy.
