Although it is easy to spot one in one of our local hiking trails, it is a rare plant not found commonly in residential landscapes or most plant nurseries.

California Barrel Cactus Appearance
Despite its name, the California barrel cactus slowly grows from a barrel shape to a cylindrical shape over time. It can reach 7 feet in height and 2 feet in width, but it would take many decades to do so.
This cactus usually grows just one stem, but it may branch out rarely.
It is covered in numerous long and very sharp spines. They are usually reddish on young cacti and turn gray as they age.
Bright yellow flowers emerge from the top, forming a ring. Yellow fruits and black seeds will appear thereafter.

California barrel cactus is very easy to grow in the Coachella Valley since it is a native plant.
Soil: Loose, well-draining soil.
Temperature: Can withstand temperatures down to 20 degrees for a short period of time. Does well in the heat.
Water: Occasional, deep watering. Allow the soil to completely dry out between waterings. Either use a moisture meter or stick your finger through the soil to gauge the moisture level. It’s better to err on the side of underwatering than overwatering.
Sun: Full sun. Partial shade is ok in the Coachella Valley
